Kitchen Backsplashes Design Ideas
When considering a kitchen remodeling project, should your backsplash be strictly functional? In my opinion, I think not!
Backsplash has two purposes: practical & decorative.
Practical: Back in the day, kitchen backsplash was just a functional item for hygienic purposes – to keep the walls clean. Of course, that is one of the main benefits of a backsplash. My wife, Brenda, loves to cook. With the backsplash we have in our kitchen, it is an easy clean-up if there is any grease that spatters or spaghetti sauce that splashes out onto the wall. Although it is a rarity with me, I enjoy cooking too. I have to admit, I am a messy chef – so the backsplash is my friend. Ha! So, compared to painting the back wall or hanging wallpaper, tiled backsplash is the way to go for hygiene and ease of clean-up.
So let’s just still focus on the functionality of backsplash a bit more. Where is most logical places to have it installed so that you can have easy clean-up? Here are a few:
- above the stove
- behind the sink area
- above the kitchen countertops
Decorative: Now the fun part. I’ve stressed the practical side of a backsplash. Let’s talk the decorative aspects. There is no doubt that backsplash plays an important role in the impact of a kitchen. Some say it is the one item in the kitchen that plays the biggest focal points. That’s up for debate. No one can argue that it definitely plays the role of tying in the whole kitchen design style and colors.
What’s nice too about backsplash, is that after 5-10 years, if the backsplash design goes out of style, you can have it professionally removed and new tile installed. Quick. Simple. Fun.
I will have more kitchen remodeling blog posts coming up shortly about:
