  • Pressure Treated – Wolmanized Lumber – This is the most cost-effective material on this list [ video link: 1:59.0 ]
  • Cedar or Redwood Lumber – Cedar looks beautiful with natural, transparent stain;  The maintenance is every  2-3 years [ video link:  5:54.0 ]
  • Ipe Decking –  Ipe decking is a very dense piece of wood and pretty expensive.  Benefits are the lower maintenance schedule. [ video link:  9:32.1 ]
  • Composite Decking Material – Although it is not maintenance free, it requires minimum maintenance;  It is very expensive but becoming very popular due to the low maintenance schedule. [ video link:  14:57.2 ]

Custom Shower Seat and Grab Bars

What are the two must-haves that everyone is installing in their bathrooms when remodeling:  custom shower seat and grab bars!  Let’s watch the video below:

Custom Shower Seat and Grab Bars

Custom shower seat and grab bars are the two remodeling requests we get for most of our customers.  Most are getting rid of that useless jet tub and installing larger showers.  When you have a larger shower, you can now add in a customer shower seat and grab bars.  Why are they so important?

  • Custom Shower Seat – If you need to have surgery, you will be so grateful to have a secure shower bench to sit down on.  Don’t wait until you need the surgery like I did.  I appreciated the medical plastic seat my wife purchased at Walgreens, but I did not feel secure at all.  Here is video link to this topic:  3:42.0 [ built-in shower bench, custom shower seat ]
  • Safety Grab Bars – Ok, let me just address the elephant in the room.  Most of us think that only elderly people need grab bars.  Most think if you have them installed in your bathroom that means you are aging.  Get over it!  When I broke my ankle and my wife needed surgery on her knee for a torn MCL, we both wished we had grab bars.  You will appreciate having that grab bar next to the custom seat bench to help you get up and down without slipping.  Here is video link to this topic:  5:11.1 [ grab bars for safety ]

Heated Custom Shower Seat

If you are going to go to the extent of having a custom shower seat installed, I’d suggest you consider having a heater installed too so that the shower bench is warm and comfortable when you sit down.  Trust me!  Here is video link to this topic:  4:43.3 [ heated bench seat ]

Long Shower Wand

If you are installing a shower seat, you need to install a long shower wand.  The reason is that you will want to be able to sit on that bench and use the long shower wand to reach across the shower over to you.  The point of the bench seat is to be able to sit down when showering.  Here is video link to this topic:  6:31.1 [ shower wands and shower heads ]

Give me a call if you need an estimate for your master bathroom, hall bathroom, or powder room.  Let’s get your shower ready and safe.  My team and I have been serving the Naperville, Plainfield, Warrenville, St. Charles, Shorewood, Joliet, and all of Chicago are for 30+ years.  I hope you’ve enjoyed my video on Custom Shower Seat and Grab Bars.

Priming Walls Before Painting

Why do you need priming walls before painting?  Mark’s video below gives you 4 reasons you need to do this step when painting:  Watch video below:

Priming Walls Before Painting

What are the four main reasons you should be priming walls before painting?  Let’s take a look:

  1. Removing Wallpaper – when you remove wallpaper, there will always be some sort of wallpaper paste residue.  You can clean the walls super clean, but you should prime the walls with a product called Gardz.   It is great to use to get the walls primed before painting.  Otherwise, you will have bubbling and peeling.  Here is a video link to my YouTube video:  0:42.0 [wallpaper paste priming with Gardz]
  2. Bare Drywall – If you have done a room addition or installed some new bare drywall, let’s say there was a hole in your wall, then that bare drywall will need priming.  Here is a video link to my YouTube video:  1:06.3 [bare drywall priming]
  3. Lighter Color to Darker Color – If you want to change up the color in your room and go from a lighter color to a darker color you will need to prime.  Priming here is necessary to make sure the coverage works.  Quick tip:  tint the primer close to your new wall paint color to get maximum coverage.  here is a video link to my YouTube video:  1:32.3 [going from lighter color to darker color paint]
  4. Grease Stains – if you want to cover up grease stains, priming walls before painting is necessary so that it doesn’t bleed through the paint.  Here is a video link to my YouTube video:  1:43.8 [covering up grease stains, what to use]

If you need any help with priming your walls before painting or interior painting, give me a call for a free estimate.  My team and I have been serving the Naperville, Plainfield, Shorewood, Joliet, St. Charles, Warrenville, and call of Chicago area for 30+ years.

Kitchen Island End Caps Options

Adding something to the end of your island is a way to make your kitchen really stand out from all the others around.  Let’s look at kitchen island end caps options in the video below:

Kitchen Island End Caps Options

There are some really cool things you at add to either end of your island in your kitchen.  These are called “end caps” to your island.

If the end cap is near your stove, then consider adding in a display rack for your favorite platters or even a spice rack you can have instant access to.  Also, this is a convenient place to display your favorite cookbooks too.

If the end cap you want to add is near your family room, a sophisticated but useful idea is adding in a wine rack.

Also, we can’t forget about the pets.  Pets are being incorporated into many kitchen remodeling projects.  At the end cap, have their food and water station set up.  That way, the whole family can eat at the same time.

Basement Remodeling Ideas

The cycle of your life determines what needs your basement plays in your home.  Let’s look at some basement remodeling ideas:

If you have a thousand square foot home on your first floor alone, then you have an additional 1,000 sq. feet possibly in your basement that is in need of some basement remodeling ideas.

Basement Remodeling Ideas

Do you want your ceiling to look great, but not spend too much money?  Have a painting contractor come in and spray the ceiling joists with black paint.  Then hang your lights, such as LED lighting, strip lighting or track lighting. Hang those lights below the ceiling joists.

Having polyaspartic flooring installed is a great idea.  Even if your basement occasionally floods, this coating is attached to your concrete floor, and will not peel or come up in a flood.

Some more basement remodeling ideas are related to wine or craft beer.  Consider having an entertainment area created by a remodeling contractor.  Here you can have a wine cellar and wine cabinets built right in.  Then have an entertainment area made to have your guests enjoy that basement area.

Give me a call if you’d like an estimate to get your basement remodeled.  Or at least partially fixed up so you can enjoy that additional space in your home.  We’ve been serving the Elmhurst, Lisle, Naperville, Burr Ridge, Downers Grove, and all Chicago area for 30+ years.

Comparing Remodeling and Painting Bids

When getting two or three estimates, sometimes the prices can vary so much, you don’t know which one to trust and sign a contract with.  Let’s figure it out in the video below when comparing remodeling and painting bids:

Choosing Hardwood Flooring and Laminate Flooring

What are the major differences between choosing hardwood flooring and laminate flooring?

Choosing Hardwood Flooring and Laminate Flooring

The typical hardwood flooring is 2 1/4 unfinished red oak, tongue and groove.  It is not for the do-it-yourself project and should be installed by a professional flooring company.  Installation requires a lot of tools and skill.  The wood after installation still needs to be stained and finished too.  This makes this type of wood a bit complex and more expensive than laminate.

Laminate flooring is more affordable.  It is pre-finished so it will give you a very consistent look because it is finished in a controlled environment.  Installation is easier than hardwood flooring too.  It is a project some DIY’ers can do if you have patience.  It is a click and lock system.

Give me a call at 815-260-6773 if you’d like an estimate when you are choosing hardwood flooring and laminate flooring.  My team and I have been serving the Naperville, Elmhurst, Lisle, Plainfield, Burr Ridge, Downers Grove and all Chicago area for 30+ years.

Replacing Kitchen Backsplash

Replacing kitchen backsplash is a great cost effective solution to update your kitchen.

Maybe you are not in love with your current kitchen backsplash.  You don’t have to do a complete kitchen remodel project to make your kitchen come alive again.  You can just replace the kitchen backsplash.

Replacing Kitchen Backsplash or Paint?

You can either take out your current kitchen backsplash and put in another, more up-to-date style.  Be prepared that the drywall might get damaged when removing the old backsplash.  You’d either have to install new drywall or resurface the existing surface.

Another option is after removing the old backsplash and fixing up the drywall, you can just repaint that area.  This is a very cost effective method to update your kitchen.

Let me know if you would like an estimate for replacing kitchen backsplash or have that area painted instead.  I’d be happy to help you out.
