How To Care for a Wood Fence

Make sure you have a good wood fence maintenance schedule.  You should clean and stain your cedar fence every 2-3 years.  First, let’s get your cedar wood fence cleaned.  You will need to either rent a pressure washer or hire a professional contractor who owns one.  Make sure you use a chemical cleaner.  Typically, a deck cleaner should be run through the power washer.  Don’t worry, most nowadays are biodegradable, so it won’t harm surrounding plants and foliage.  At this point of the maintenance, you’ll be able to notice if you have any wood fence boards rotting.

Next, you’ll want to apply 1 coat of an oil-based stain.  The reason why I’m so ‘married’ to using an oil-based stain is that I feel the oil stain penetrates better than the acrylic.  You then have the option to choose between a transparent, semi-transparent, or semi-solid stain.  If you want a more natural look, I’d suggest using a transparent stain.  If you want more body and/or color, then you should use a semi-transparent or semi-solid stain.
