The Importance of Cleaning Your Gutters

Your gutters are one of the most important parts of your home’s exterior. They play a crucial role in directing water away from your foundation and protecting your roof from water damage.

That’s why it’s so important to keep them clean and free of debris. If you don’t, you could be facing some serious problems down the road.

Here are just a few of the reasons why you should make sure to keep your gutters clean:

  1. To Prevent Water Damage – If your gutters are clogged, water will have nowhere to go but into your home. This can lead to all sorts of problems, including water damage to your foundation, walls, and ceilings.
  2. To Avoid Pest Infestations – Gutters that are full of debris are the perfect breeding ground for pests like mosquitoes, rats, and moles/mice. Keep your gutters clean to help keep these critters out of your home.
  3. To Maintain Your Curb Appeal – Let’s face it: gutters that are full of leaves and other debris are not exactly aesthetically pleasing. Keeping them clean will help maintain the curb appeal of your home.
  4. To Save Money – Cleaning your gutters may seem like a hassle, but it’s nothing compared to the cost of repairing water damage or dealing with a pest infestation. A little bit of effort now can save you a lot of money down the road.
  5. To Prevent Ice Damming in the Winter – In the winter, clogged gutters can allow ice to build up under your roof shingles. Once this happens, you will more than likely have water get under the shingles and leak into your ceilings. You now will have to repair your ceilings with drywall repair and painting.

So there you have it, five good reasons to make sure your gutters are clean and free of debris. Don’t wait until it’s too late – get started today

How to Properly Clean Gutters

Cleaning your gutters may seem like a daunting task, but it’s important to do on a regular basis to keep your home in top condition. Gutters play a crucial role in protecting your home from water damage, so it’s essential to keep them clean and free of debris.

There are a few different methods you can use to clean your gutters, but the most important thing is to be safe. Always use a sturdy 16- foot ladder, gutter protector, and a ladder stabilizer when climbing up on a ladder. And never try to reach too far. If you’re not comfortable doing the job yourself, hire a professional to do it for you.  Use a telescoping pole to attach the gutter protector.

Once you’ve safely climbed up to your gutters, use a garden hose to flush out any debris that’s accumulated. You can also use a gutter scoop or your hands (with a vinyl glove) to remove larger pieces of debris. Be sure to dispose of the debris properly so it doesn’t end up back in your gutters with a 5-gallon bucket. I always hang the bucket off of the ladder with a bucket pot hook, so I don’t have to balance and hold onto the bucket.

You might have to take off the gutter elbows if they are clogged. You will need to use a drill with a 1/4″ drill bit as well to take off the gutter elbow. After you’ve cleared out the debris, check the gutters for any signs of damage. If you see any cracks or holes, seal them with gutter sealant to prevent further damage. Once your gutters are clean and in good condition, be sure to keep them that way by cleaning them on a regular basis.

What To Do If You Cannot Clean Your Gutters Yourself

If you’re not comfortable cleaning your gutters yourself, the next best option is to hire a professional contractor. Look for a contractor who is experienced and has a good reputation. Be sure to get multiple estimates before making a decision, and always get the job in writing.

When hiring a professional contractor, be sure to ask about their gutter cleaning process. They should be able to provide you with a detailed plan of how they will clean your gutters, and they should also be able to answer any questions you have. Be sure to ask about their experience level and whether they have insurance.

Cleaning gutters is a relatively easy task that you can do yourself, but if you’re not comfortable doing it, you can always hire a professional. Just make sure that whoever you hire has the experience and is insured so that you’re not left with any surprises.

If you can’t clean your gutters yourself, don’t worry – there are still plenty of options for keeping them clean and clear. You can install gutter guards or covers, which will keep leaves and debris from getting into your gutters in the first place. You can also have someone come and clean your gutters for you on a regular basis.

No matter how you choose to keep your gutters clean, the important thing is that you do it regularly. This will help prolong the life of your gutters and keep your home looking its best.
