Warped Wood Siding
How to Fix Your Dry Cedar Siding
Warped wood siding can happen over time, but why? And the next question is if it is warped, do you need to replace it? Typically, the warped wood siding is happening due to three reasons, improper maintenance schedule, age, and mother nature. Let’s look at each one of these a bit further.
An improper maintenance schedule could be to blame for warped wood siding. When was the last time you had the house cleaned & stained? This is just something you cannot let go for too long, otherwise, it ends up costing you more in the long run.
Age of the Wood Siding Panels
Also, another factor why it might be warping and drying out is just the age of the siding panels (check out the video). They won’t last forever, no matter what type of maintenance schedule, since it is not a man-made product. Because siding can dry, rot or warp at different times, you sometimes get stuck in a cycle of always replacing a few panels here and there.
Mother Nature’s Hand on Cedar Siding
And finally, Mother Nature could have a play in this game of your cedar siding warping, drying out or rotten siding. What do I mean by this? Well, let’s think about it, it really depends on where you live in the United States and the weather conditions there. It also depends on where your house is located in your city. If you are surrounded by many trees, then tree sap, bugs, woodpeckers (check out the video), and lots of sun or rain can take a huge toll on your house.
Proper Application and Number of Coats
We always recommend staining cedar siding a solid-body stain every six to eight years (two coats). And every three to five years for semi-transparent (two coats).
Why is the Siding Warping?
So why is the wood siding warping? It is drying out. Cedar siding is supposed to lay on top of one another like beveled siding or a channel siding where it should fit nice and tight. The challenge is as it ages, it starts to shrink and when you find that when it starts to shrink, you’re going to have openings for bugs, rain, many different things that can cause bigger problems down the road for you. This would be the time to replace it before the problems become huge.
But what if you don’t know if you should stain or paint your siding? Mark is asked this quite a bit, so don’t feel this is a silly question. Here is a video Mark did for you on whether to use exterior stain or exterior paint (check out the video) on your siding.
